Koeweiden Postma

For 469 days I worked at design office Koeweiden Postma in Amsterdam. I’ve collected some of the stuff that I did there.

Syntrus

Syntrus - the pensions devision of Dutch insurance company Achmea - asked KP to develop a new visual corporate identity. The company has three main activities - pensions administration, asset management and real estate development - each with quite different corporate cultures and stakeholders. The challenge was to develop a style and logo that would do justice to all of them.

The proposed look & feel and logo below are businesslike but not cold, stylish but not distant. They leave room for the humane - pensions - and for business - developing and operating real estate.

What all three activities have in common are numbers and calculations. Numbers generally stand for coldhearted and impersonal, but here their meaning is reversed into the opposite by creating an almost joyful fabric with them that can be added to any company touchpoint - either in a subtle or in a more explicit way.

Velsen county

Velsen is a county with many faces. It contains the largest fishing harbour of the Netherlands, steelmills, nature reserves, historic estates and villages, North Sea locks, beaches and both swanky and new residential areas in seven distinct villages and towns among which IJmuiden.

KP was asked to develop a new logo and visual identity to replace the archaic and inconsistent existing one. The new identity should match and facilitate the ambitions of the county but also do justice to the rather different aspects of the area.

The new logo combines tradition - the ‘Agnus Dei’ which has been the symbol of the area for ages - with the present - the robust V with an opening towards the North Sea. The logo can be used in seven different colors and it always stands apart from the name. [In co-operation with Jorn Dal]

Velsen county (alternative)

One of the other concepts we proposed was aimed at giving identity and coherence to Velsen county, an area that has always been somewhat undefined and fragmented. It utilises a visual language that combines heraldry that is tied to the history of the area and symbols that come with present day marine life. The proposal is based on a rich visual language that can be used to mark and claim objects and landmarks as belonging to Velsen. [In co-operation with Jorn Dal].

Muziektheater Amsterdam

A funky custom made typeface that immediately identifies flyers and posters as messages from The Amsterdam Music Theatre. [In co-operation with Jacques Koeweiden]

CataType

A custom typeface for one of KP’s clients. It features a number of special characters that I cannot show here yet.

Eureko

A new corporate website for Eureko, one of the largest insurance groups in Europe. The site mainly contains business information - lots of text and very few pictures - so ample attention is given to typography and clear and easy site navigation.

Zicht

The insurance intermediaries of ING Bank - formerly known as ING Assurantiekantoren Nederland - have a new name: Zicht risk and insurance advisers. A new name calls for a new identity and this is one out of several proposed concepts.

Key are the values protection and ‘customer driven’ and a positioning as ‘silent trusted force’. On top of that there was a need for modesty - because of the reputation damage in the financial world caused by the financial crisis - but without sacrificing self confidence. That’s why the name is placed in something that resembles a shield, in a friendly but businesslike script typeface. Pleasant colours, a quiet layout and a friendly serif typeface make for accessability.
